The ad revenue sharing model for Shorts differs from the traditional video content, with a portion allocated to the “creator pool” based on views of all Shorts.

How does YouTube Shorts Monetization work?

Your YouTube Shorts revenue is split between two parties: one is the creator who makes the video, and another is the music publisher who provides the song for the Shorts.

Here are the details:

  • A small amount of Shorts revenue goes to the creator pool. It is calculated based on views and music usage on all Shorts.
  • Then YouTube pays the music publishers based on how often their music is played on Shorts.
  • If a creator uses a piece of music in his Shorts, revenue is split in half between the creator and the music publisher.
  • If a creator uses no music track, the creator gets all revenue from the share from the creator pool.
  • Monetizing creators get 45% of revenue share from the creator pool.

The new YPP policy is for the below monetization rules:

  • Watch Page Monetization Module: It allows creators to earn money on any ads served across their videos, live streams, and YouTube premium content.
  • Shorts Monetization Module: Content creators can earn money from YouTube Shorts. This money comes from ads that are played between shorts in the feeds.
  • Commerce Product Addendum: This means that, for extra features like Channel Membership, Super Stickers, and Super chats, monetization will be covered. You don’t need to agree again if you have used these features before.

How to Turn on YouTube Monetization:

Once you accept YouTube’s new terms and conditions, your YouTube Shorts is already monetized. If you miss the memo, head directly to YouTube Studio in a web browser and accept the terms and conditions.

What are the minimum eligibility requirements to turn on YouTube Shorts Monetization?

  • A creator should be at least 18 years old. Or the creator should have legal parents/guardians older than 18 years old who are eligible to handle all the payments through AdSense.
  • A content creator should accept the given contract modules.
  • A content creator should create content that follows YouTube advertiser-friendly content guidelines.

As per YouTube’s policy, only creators from 10 countries are eligible to participate in this so far. These counties are The U.S., U.K., Brazil, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, and South Africa. It will be expanded to other countries in the future, though.

To be eligible for the YouTube Shorts Monetization, you must have uploaded at least one eligible Short in the last 180 days. Your channel must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines, copyright rules, and monetization policies. You should avoid uploading videos or YouTube Shorts with watermarks from other people’s social media platforms or videos that are not original or videos re-uploaded from other channels.
